Welcome

Your first year at a college or university marks the beginning of an intellectual and spiritual quest that will last a lifetime. It is, in many respects, a contemplative journey that requires the development of basic academic proficiencies. It also asks that you begin to discern your passions and deepen your sense of curiosity and wonder. Those of us who will serve as your advisors, mentors, and course instructors this year will accompany you on this journey. We will teach, in part, by revealing what we have experienced and learned along the way. The poems, aphorims, meditations, photographs, video clips, music, exercises, sketches, observations, calculations, and proposals on this blog are my way of sharing what I have come to know - as well as what I am discovering - as one such fellow traveler ...

Ten Years' Gleanings

Aphorisms have long been used to distill essential truths. Below, are nine such short sayings -- in a single poem -- that highlight a few personal lessons learned in this first decade of the 21st century.

Nine from Ten

Growth can't be "paused" or put "on hold"
Crises don't conform to schedules, however carefully planned
We learn most deeply those things that stir the heart
Teaching makes us fellow travelers on a common quest with humanity
Scholarship, leadership, and daily life are arts with comparable poetics
Discovery comes via small, yet persistent, advances
Advancement is the fruit of modest, yet recurring, discoveries
Love is the fire those in search of Wisdom must enkindle
The shade of daily life is neither black nor white - but gloriously Blue
